Fear and resentment. These things are terrible and are very destructive to democracy and society as a whole. Historically, so many wars and terrible events have come about from far too much of these two things. Therefore, tackling these problems in society should always be high on any agenda.
DO WE HAVE THESE THINGS IN THE UK?
The short answer is yes, we believe we do.
The fact that the Leave vote won indicates that there was at least some fear of EU control. There was also a fear of losing our identity - some of us felt that our national pride was in some way being eradicated by the EU and other factors attached to it. People also feared and resented too many immigrants and the effects that these people have on our culture and employment. These fears and resentments still exist within many Leave voters, regardless of the fact they have won the vote. This is why they remain so happy with the result.
Meanwhile, rather than cure the nation of it's problems, the EU Referendum vote has added MORE fear and resentment to our society. Those that voted to Remain now fear for their futures, as the country they loved prepares to change forever. They also fear for the future of the Human Rights Act and for equality. They fear that they may not be able to travel freely anymore and that we, as a country, will face great financial difficulties in the years to come. They worry that racism, fascism and other prejudiced ideologies will have a chance to grow in our new society. They resent those people who voted Leave because, in their eyes, they have acted irresponsibly and destroyed a union that they cherished dearly, opening us up to uncertainty and instability.
You can't control fear or resentment; they are just things that grow in us. Very often, nobody is to blame for this, not even the person themselves - so this site is not a place for pointing fingers and saying 'It's all your fault'.
Likewise, we don't believe the media or our statesmen are solely to blame either. Yes, these may help feed the problem to meet their own needs. However, it has to be there in the first place for them to be able to feed it! They just tap into our underlying fears and uncertainties.
It is in our uneducated opinion that the only way to deal with fear and resentment is to address it head on. We believe this can only be done if we open our minds, listen to each other's concerns and opinions, and try to understand each other's view points. We need to put ourselves in other people's shoes and try to see why they feel the way they do. Then we need to work out a middle ground and see how we can heal the rifts. This is one of the many things this site hopes to work towards.
To do this, we hope to offer unbiased information, listen to a wide range of opinions and also, offer professional help for those that feel they may need it.
We appreciate that this sounds a little ideological and utopian and we hasten to add, we certainly don't expect it to work with everyone. Some people are happy with society or they don't wish to understand what other people think. They also don't care much for building bridges. However, for others, we hope we can help.
